What To Wear for Fall Family Photos

Now is the perfect time to start thinking about those annual fall family photos! Not only is it a beautiful time of year to take photos, with the changing leaves and cooler temperatures, but it also gives you plenty of time to get your photos back before the holidays. Plus, if you’ve ever taken photos in the summer, I bet you promised yourself to book your next session in the fall when your face wasn’t glistening from chasing toddlers around in 90 degree heat. With every family photo session, comes the number one question, what to wear? I’ve curated eight outfits for the whole family to help give you inspiration for what to wear for fall family photos. Plus, I’m rounding up even more favorites for mom and kids below!

For this fall family look I went with shades of blue and green. This would be perfect for an outdoor family photo session! Imagine these colors in a field of green or near lush foliage. The blue and green hues will play off of nature with ease. Here you can see we also introduced the color tan through the suede boots and khaki pants. You usually need at least one neutral color to play off your more bold colors for a balance feel. I also mix and matched the shades of green to play off the varying colors of the floral pattern in the baby romper. This really helped to tie the family look all together.

If dresses are not your cup of tea, don’t worry! You can still have stunning fall family photos without having a skirt or dress on. Pants are also a great option if you are going for a more relaxed feel to your photos. If you’re having an indoor session, maybe it’s even in your own home, these two looks are perfect for you. The left look we have shades of burgundy and green that play nicely off of each other, without having to much contrast. The look on the right ties mustard yellows and green together for a soft fall look. These are both great examples of how you can mix and match different patterns. In both looks you have one smaller pattern and one larger pattern. This is the key to mixing and matching patterns with ease so that you get those gorgeous family photos that you’re wanting.

This neutral fall family look would be great for an indoor or outdoor photo session. I love this little floral dress for a toddler girl. It’s easy to pull out the colors from the floral pattern by highlighting the navy, green and blush pink. By sticking with solid colors for the rest of the family, it made the dress pop even more. If you have two girls this would be a great option to do a matching moment for your littles.

Another great alernative to a dress is a skirt! Here I’ve styled both a midi skirt and an above the knee skirt. Since the midi skirt has more volume, I would recommend pairing it with something more fitted like a bodysuit. However, the plaid skirt is slightly more fitted, therefore an oversized sweater and knee high boots is the perfect addition to that look. The look on the left I pulled out colors from the plaid toddler girl top. The look on the right I went with traditional fall colors and patterns. The plaid on the skirt is so subtle that when paired with the toddler girl’s floral romper it feels like to perfect combination for fall.

This last fall family outfit idea is a slightly more dressy option. This would be perfect if you are going to be in a metro setting with buildings or maybe even dramatic scenery. Since mom and baby girl are both in complimentary prints, I opted for more classic pieces for the men. You can never go wrong with suspenders on little boys, they are the cutest!
