Did you know that 1 in 8 women in the US are diagnosed with invasive Breast Cancer over the course of their lifetime? I’m sure we all know women close to us that have been affected by this disease in one way or another. I wanted to share a few tips on self examination with you and always encourage you to talk to your doctor if you feel like something is not right.

In preparation for this post I did some research on breast self examinations. To be honest I have never done one before and didn’t realize there was a need at my age to consistently do them. A lot of the articles I read encouraged women of adult age to perform a breast self exam monthly in order to determine early if there are changes in their breast and surrounding areas.

There are a few ways suggested on how to perform a breast self examination. The one that seemed easiest and most natural to me was a routine I could do before bed. Assess the physical form in a mirror during your nightly routine. Ask yourself if they look their normal size, shape and color and if there are any visible distortions or swelling. Then raise your arms and look for the same changes. Also, look for any signs of fluid coming out of your nipples. The followings characteristics may be of concern: dimpling, swelling, bulging, redness, soreness or rash.

Next, you should assess the tissue while lying down. This is recommended because when you are lying, the breast tissue spreads out making thinner and easier to feel. You should take the opposite hand from breast and use the pads of your fingers using a smooth firm touch to rub in a circular motion (size of a quarter) from the outside of breast to center. You want to be sure and check from the arm pit area to the entire breast. Think top to bottom, side to side. If you do think you found a lump or something abnormal make sure to talk to a healthcare provider and voice any concerns.

I’ve partnered with Soma today to share one of my favorites wireless bras. Since we are talking about the girls, it’s only appropriate that you get the info on my go-to bra as well. Alongside keeping them safe, let’s keep them comfy!

I’ve been wearing the Soma Enbliss Wireless Bra for the last few months and love it! I am not a huge fan of bras with wires and usually opt for something wireless. This bra holds everything in place while giving just the right support. It’s smooth and does show any lines through your clothing – which is a big test for me! This bra comes in several colors and sizes. You won’t be disappointed!

The shirt I’m wearing in today’s post is part of the Living Beyond Breast Cancer Collection. For every purchase of this limited-edition shirt, Soma will donate $5 to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, up to $100,000. I love the strong message on the shirt and think it’s a great way to honor and support those fighting breast cancer.
