How to Layer a Sweater Over a Dress

Surprise! In typically loverly grey fashion, this is actually a dress! Over the years I’ve coined this as my signature look. If you don’t believe me, go ahead and do a deep dive on my Instagram feed. I guarantee you’ll see a Brittany with a side swoop haircut and a sweater layered over a dress circa 2016. Since this is one of my biggest fashion hacks in the fall, I thought I would give you a peak at exactly how to layer a sweater over a dress, using a few of my favorite fall new arrivals from Walmart.

HOW TO LAYER A SWEATER OVER A DRESS

One of my favorite things to do is layer a sweater over a dress to get more versatility and wear out of the pieces that you have in your wardrobe. This cream collared sweater is a little on the cropped side and has a natural cinch to it. This makes it perfect for layering. Usually if the sweater is a little larger I will create a cropped look by using a skinny belt. Tuck the sweater into the belt and slightly pul it out over the belt so that you can’t see it. But with this style sweater, you don’t have to do that!

The key to layering a sweater over a dress is to make sure the sweater hits at your waist, to create the look of a top and skirt. I’ve also paired sweaters over dresses that are midi length and usually opt for a shorter sweater like this one. If you are pairing a longer sweater over a dress, I would recommend a loose fitting dress that will give the allusion of a ruffle hem at the bottom.

The best part about this look is that you can always wear this stunning dress on it’s own! Simply pair with knee high suede boots and add your favorite shoulder bag to round out the look. I’m wearing and extra small in both the sweater and the dress and would say they run true to size. You can also wear the sweater on its own and pair it with mom jeans and mules for a more casual fall look.
