Elevated Fall Family Photo Outfit Ideas

Don’t worry, if you haven’t snapped your fall family photos, you’re not too late. In fact, I almost prefer to wait until later in the season when the temperatures have dropped a bit, and the leaves have started changing colors. Especially if your photos on taking place outdoors, it can make for a gorgeous backdrop. I’ve had a few requests for slightly dressier options for fall family outfit ideas recently so I thought it would be fun to give you a few options. In this post you’ll find six curated looks for the whole family. Plus, I’m rounding up even more options at the bottom of this post, so be sure to scroll until the end!

When it comes to elevated fall family photos, a lot can be said by the fabrics that you choose. Instead of a chunky sweater dress, opt for a sleek midi sweater dress for yourself and pair with heels. From there have your husband wear pressed chinos and a nice sweater. Your little ones can be in coordinating looks with either a romper or dress for her and a sweater for him. Be sure to opt for dressier shoe options for the boys, such as loafers or dress shoes.

Another easy option for fall family photos is to opt for an all neutral palette. This can be especially pretty if you’re wanting your photos to have a light and airy outdoor feel, or if you’re shooting in a mostly white studio. The key to achieving the all neutral look without having it feel blah, is to have varying shades and textures that play well off of each other. The light pink, champagne color of mom’s dress compliments the color of baby’s romper, while the tan toddler dress pairs well with the slight plaid pattern in dad’s pants. It’s these subtle details that truly tie the look together!

Although most people think of a yellow and burgundy color palette for fall family photos, don’t be afraid to opt for a pretty mauve pink as your statement color! I especially love this dress because the velvet fabric gives it a wintery feel while still feeling light and airy. Since the majority of the family is in solid colors, I opted to put baby boy in a striped sweater set to add a little variety. The key is to ensure the stripes are subtle, and the color compliments the rest of the family. This is best done when you don’t have a second pattern that is competing with the stripes.

If your photos are taking place in a city or with architecture background, this will be a great option for you. I can see crisp buildings or large cement stairs playing nicely off of the blue, white and grey color palette. This long sleeve dotted dress also comes in a white and black color option. If you’re wanting an even more elevated look, you could wear the black option and have your husband switch our his navy chinos for black dress pants to instantly kick this family look up a notch.

If you’re going to be using your fall family photos for holiday cards, this fall family outfit idea is perfect for you! The plaid dress is the statement piece that everything else works off of. Mom’s dress has a dressier look with the silk fabric, giving it that true holiday feel. You can have dad wear navy and grey or even navy and a light pair of dress pants to compliment the rest of the family. To round out the look, I recommend adding in some texture with this color block sweater set that can be gender neutral. If you have two girls, switch out the shoes and add a bow to make the sweater set a little more girly!

I’ve rounded up a few more great options for fall family photos below. There are so many great dresses for mom, basics for dad and sweet little looks for you minis. Remember, stick with a color palette of 3-4 colors and find items that compliment each other.
