How I Got Into Blogging – History

7 June |

Jumpsuit \\ Hat \\ Shoes

Good Morning! I have been getting some questions lately on how I got started into blogging and if I was always interested in fashion so I figure “Let me write a blog post!”

Some history for you….I started Loverly Grey in January 2016. I started an Instagram Account first to see if people were even interested in me posting outfit pictures then once that started taking off, I started the actual blog portion of Loverly Grey in April/May of 2016.

Fashion and styling outfits was always something that came natural to me. I remember in high school I would write down in my agenda what outfit I was wearing each day to school. When I was ready to wear one of those pieces again, I would look back and see when I wore it last and would try to mix the top or skirt with a different skirt or top. I never really knew at the time why that version of outfit planning brought me so much joy but it did.

I also have always loved sale shopping. I could spend hours in a store searching the sale racks for the right pieces. I would also look for items full price that I loved then wait for them to go on sale. I starting following trends of sales at certain stores and knew the perfect time to buy each item.

I also remember in high school, I would try new trends and put looks together that were more than just a shirt and jeans. Like one day my senior year, I wore a polo button down, tucked in to jean shorts that came above my knees with a belt, nude wedges and a borrowed tie from a guy friend. I have no idea why I wanted to wear “menswear chic” – if you can even call it that, but I was trying to be different and stand out. I think I was also trying to prove to myself that I didn’t have to wear what everyone else was wearing and I could make a look my own. I was in a Fashion Marketing Class and I told the teacher that every morning I decided what shoes I wanted to wear then picked out the rest of my outfit around that. I still do that to some extent these days.

I have always had a passion for clothing and putting outfits together for myself and for others. I worked in small boutiques during college and right after and loved styling clients each day. Once I started working in the corporate world, I was wearing business professional looks and knew putting these outfits together was something I could easily start to share on social media. I had been following other bloggers and I really just learned from them. I saw what they were doing and how they were posing and tried to do those things but in my own way.

I had encouragement from a girlfriend who really pushed me to start an Instagram account. My argument was “no one will care about what i’m wearing to work every day…” and she always told me, “You will never know unless you try!” Boy, am I glad I listened to her advice!

That’s just a little bit of a back story about me and I will follow this post up with blogging tips for new bloggers. I would also love to know if there are other topics related to this one you want to know about! Just comment below and I’ll get your requests in the works!

  1. So proud of you Britt! I’ve enjoyed watching you “plan outfits” for years! You’ve always had such great taste and ideas! It started with my first memory with you when you wore your bright dress to recruitment! 🙂 I can’t wait to see where your blog takes you and all of the lives you change through it! 🙂

  2. What was your major in college? How did you get into the corporate world? I LOVE fashion and would love to have a job dealing with this! I’m just a little stuck on to what is a good route to go. You are such an inspiration! Thank you for sharing everything that you do! ????

  3. So fun reading your blog. I would do the same in for school. When I was growing up we did not have insta so I would get inspiration from the movies on TV, Charlie’s angles Jacqueline a jacqueline smith. My friends would tell me my hair looked like Farrah Facet. Dynasty was another great inspiration show. I love your style. Did you attend any conferences? Just to learn the specifics.. Or you learned that on your own.

  4. Thank you so much for sharing! I am a new blogger myself and I am just getting started. I am currently working on a blog and it can be a very vulnerable thing for me at times as I am creating it. I am open to any or all of your best tips for getting started. I have the determination and passion, but I know there is a lot more for me to learn. I appreciate all you do and thank you for taking time out of your day to help “newbie” bloggers like me.

  6. Thank you so much for sharing this, i am new to your blog and IG but just think you are so vibrant and love your style! Do you work full time on top of blogging? Before collaborating with affiliate programs how did you get engagement on your IG post and blog? Did you send people to your blog from IG? How do you find all the great deal and newest trends and styles to shop from or with? Lastly, how do you post so quickly about the style you blogging about or posting about on IG, is there a way to know its still in stock or on sale etc? I am relaunching my blog, as i took time off to establish mommy hood! Thank you again in advance 🙂 I know blogging is not easy and takes a lot of time so i applaud you! I love to learn from the best

    XO,
    Alex

  7. Hey Brittany,

I’ve recently been following you through Instagram and your blog. You’re a doll! Your story on how you got into doing this seems so similar to mine, except I am not ‘doing’ it. I also went to school for Fashion Marketing and was a personal shopper for Marshall Fields (Now Macy’s) in college! I have been doing some styling for friends and their friends, etc… It’s such a passion of mine and would be a dream to do it for a living. So if it’s not too much, I do have a few questions for you!!
Do you think just having an Instagram page would have been sufficient enough, or do you think you needed a blog to go hand in hand with it? I just don’t know where to start. It seems like I get questions more and more lately to start a side business of styling/fitting/personal shopping. I am currently a director of Student Ministries in Madison, WI, and love what I do! Do you feel like there wasn’t breathing room for you to do this on the side? Is it a full time position, or is it what you put into it?

Thanks so much! Have an amazing day!

  8. Wow!!! As I was reading the part about you writing down what outfits you wore I was screaming “me too!!!!” I had a chalkboard in my room and I would write everything on there. My friends used to think I was crazy but I did not want to repeat an outfit. Haha! It was serious business.

Congratulations on all of your success. I can’t wait to see your posts everyday.

  9. Love this post! Thanks so much for sharing. What did you do before you picked up blogging full time? Was that a scary transition? I’m in a corporate job now and dream every day about starting a blog or doing something more creative on my own. Thanks for the inspiration today!

  10. Hi Brittany!

First off, let me just say that your jumpsuit is SO fun!!

Second, you are one of my biggest blogger inspirations! You always look so chic, but I just love that you’re a sale rack peruser! I actually live around the Alpharetta area with my husband now but we are moving to Athens next Monday while he goes to back to school. It is so cool to see you visiting the places I visit! (Umm fave place to eat is most definitely El Felix!!!!)

I am launching my own fashion blog when my husband and I settle in Athens. It is because of bloggers like you who have pushed me, even without your knowledge of doing so, that I finally have taken that next step to launching my blog. I have my site designed and ready and am currently working on my editorial calendar so if you have any tips for that I would love to see them! 🙂

Stay tuned and again, keep being amazing! I love your style!

    Effortlessly,
    Chelsea

  11. So awesome! You definitely have a super cute and fun knack for style! I love your Instagram account! Plus your sweet puppy is too darling!
